Special Needs and Disability
Urban Building projects prides itself on offering a first class service tailored to all needs when it comes to carrying out special needs and disability work.

Disability.....
Urban has developed an in depth knowledge of working with the disabled, elderly, people with learning disabilities, and the generally infirm. We are constantly aware that this is different environment in which to work, and have developed all the skills necessary both in the personal needs of the client and their families / carers, and in the specialist requirements in terms of what is built.

Seabank Road, Wallasey

The wallasey job (click banner above for portfolio) was done for a client who currently has some mobility and independence, but also has a condition which will sadly deteriorate over time. The house is a large Victorian one on three levels, so Urban built a lift into the existing property. We had to work to give the client a quality of life and we did that by making gardening areas accessible, provided a small workshop and also adapted the kitchen so food can still be prepared in the short term. We also considered the client's condition and included an induction hob and none of the appliances were integrated to avoid confusion.

The project in full consisted of:
Disabled ramps.
• Hoist installation.
Widening doors to accommodate wheelchair access.
Lift.
Wet rooms and disabled shower areas.
Adapting kitchens for disabled use.
Adjusting light fittings and sockets throughout.
Adapting alarms.
Specialist bath.

Oakmere, Cheshire

Oakmere was a different situation entirely (click banner above for portfolio). The client was paralysed from the waist down in an accident. We provided complete mobility throughout his house and gardens, built a gym room, provided state of the art TV, gaming and satellite facilities. The property was also built to accommodate a future hydrotherapy pool.

The project in full consisted of:
• Adapting a bungalow for full level access internally and externally.
• Disabled shower / wet rooms including specialist bath, shower and body dryer.
• Special feature trusses to support a new ceiling mounted hoist system.
• Adapting door openings, sockets and light switches for disabled access.
• Electrical circuitry for assistive technology and in the future the internal doors can me motion sensitive.
Automated external gates.
Disabled kitchen.

Alterations to form disabled ramp access
The Crescent, Stockport

At the Crescent in Stockport (click images above), Urban were working in an environment where both the physically and mentally infirm were receiving care. The majority of these residents had severe learning difficulties, to the extent that certain colours and levels of brightness had to be taken into consideration.

Our contract was for:
Adapting the existing entrance roads and driveways.
DDA ramps and externals.
